张璐 (Zhāng Lù) has served as the chief English interpreter for the top politicians in the country and – unusually for an interpreter – is wildly popular among normal people too.
Zhāng Lù earned nationwide fame when social media got majorly excited about the “美女翻译” – “the beautiful interpreter woman” who was translating the premier’s annual Liănghuì (Two Meetings) speech some years ago.
Apart from her looks, Zhāng Lù is also famous for her improvisation skills. For example, former premier Wēn Jiābǎo was famous for answering questions by quoting ancient Chinese poems: Great for showing educatedness, less great for a stressed simultaneous interpreter who has to somehow make it intelligible for the rest of the world.
But not Zhāng Lù. Zhāng Lù is unfazed. And the world appreciates it.
No poetry is too tough for Zhang Lu. Sohu
