周润发 (Zhōu Rùnfā) is one the most famous actors in the world. In the West, he is known by his Hong Kong name, Chow Yun-fat, and famous for his work with movies like “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”, and “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End”.
Named “the coolest actor in the world” by the Los Angeles Times in the 1990’s, Zhōu Rùnfā has acted in everything from comedy to romance, but is particularly famous for his gunman and gangster roles. A pioneer in the “gun fu” genre (which is exactly what it sounds like), he’s the personification of Hong Kong cinema, and the kind of actor who’s (literally) included in primary school textbooks.
Zhōu Rùnfā is famous for his rags-to-riches story: He grew up in a home with no electricity and lived off odd jobs until his rise to megastardom. Now he’s probably the most famous actor you’ve never heard of.
