梁山伯（Liáng Shānbó）and 祝英台（Zhù Yīngtái ）are known as the Butterfly Lovers. In this 1000+ year-old legend Zhù is allowed by her father to get an education if she disguises herself as a man. There, she becomes best friends with (/falls madly in love with) classmate Liáng, but can’t tell him directly, and he doesn’t seem to take a hint.
Finally, she manages to set Liáng up with “her sister”, but at that point, another classmate has already gone and asked her parents for her hand. When Liáng understands (finally!), he dies of a broken heart.
When Zhù’s (unwanted) wedding procession passes by Liáng’s grave, thunder breaks open the grave, and she passionately throws herself in. They both turn into butterflies and fly away together.
The legend is often compared to “Romeo and Juliet”, and has been adapted into countless operas and plays.
