宋氏三姐妹 (Sòng shì sān jiě mèi), the three Sòng sisters, were some of the most powerful women in history, and they changed China forever.
The sisters were born to a missionary family in the 1890s, and all three studied at Wesleyan College – the first Chinese women to study in the US – before returning to rule China through marriage.
The oldest, Àilíng, married Kŏng Xiángxī, the richest man in China. The middle sister, Qìnglíng, married Sūn Zhōngshān, the first president of the Republic after the last emperor’s abdication. The youngest, Mĕilíng, married Chiang Kai-shek, the military commander who would since become President.
This combination made their family the most powerful in China, but they were soon divided by the Chinese Civil War, ending up on different sides of the bloody conflict.
Their eventful lives have inspired endless series of books, movies, and pop culture.
