红色娘子军 (Hóngsè Niángzi Jūn), “The Red Detachment of Women”, is a girl power story that has been told through every medium from novel to ballet to film.
Based on true events, and set on the tropical Hăinán Island in 1931, the story follows the poor girl Wú Qiónghuā, who is taken in by an all-female military detachment after being enslaved and mistreated by her village’s landowner for many years. The women train hard in order to defeat the landowner and liberate Wú’s village.
During a mission, Wú sees the landowner and is overcome by hatred. She disobeys orders and shoots at him, but he manages to escape. She is reprimanded for her recklessness and must train even harder. In the final battle, Wú’s detachment commander is captured and killed, and Wú rises to the challenge and becomes the next commander.
The last member of the detachment died in 2014, over 100 years old.
